Changes in relationships were assessed in two ways. First, participants were asked whether the relationship with each network partner mentioned in the Circle Task (see Network Structure) had changed during the past five years (3 point scale; 1 = stayed the same, 2 = got worse, 3 =improved).
Second, participants were asked four single questions about different aspects of the changes in relationships on five point scales (ratings in parentheses), which were taken/adapted from the Social Networks in Adult Life Questionnaire (Kahn & Antonucci, 1980): (a) the number of relationships (1 = has decreased a lot, 5 = has increased a lot), (b) the importance of family relationships (1 = has become much less important, 5 = has become much more important), (c) the importance of relationships with friends and acquaintances (1 = has become much less important, 5 = has become much more important), and (d) a social comparison with peers' relationships (1 = much less, 5 = much more).
In addition, there was one question about general changes since the opening of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989.

Literature: Smith & Baltes, 1996; Wagner, Schütze, & Lang, 1996; Schütze, & Lang, 1993.

Relationships in review: Participants were asked single questions concerning (a) the important persons in their lives, (b) persons who disappointed them, (c) valued persons, and (d) the actual relationship to their children. Except for (d) which was an open-ended question, participants were asked to name the persons in question. The persons mentioned were coded in terms of type of relationship.
